This is a glorious property set in the most bucolic of locations beside a river that runs throughout the year. This former Mill has the appearance of a gracious country house that has melded into its surroundings, and everywhere has an elegant patina commensurate with its age. There are elements that surprise and delight around every corner, and it is a relief to see that the property has not been over-reformed, so the interior and exterior spaces still exude the spirit of the past. That is not to say that the property needs attention, as this is not the case. The current owners bought the Mill 12 years ago, and the previous owners, a DJ and his partner, worked on the property to create a traditional country house, retaining its integrity and character, and designed for people: visitors, guests, families and friends who want to relax in a gorgeous house in a gorgeous valley.

It is a large property, extending over 428 m2, but the original elegant proportions still exist and there is a warmth and a heart to the house that is difficult to describe. The layout lends itself to many possible uses: as a rambling family home; as a large holiday rental property with private owner’s accommodation; as a beautiful Bed and Breakfast property; as a centre for creative courses, such as painting, pottery or mosaics.

The main house has a tourism license for holiday rentals, and generates an average of €1,750 per week.

    Main House - Ground Floor

From the lovely central courtyard, there are double doors that open into an elegant entrance reception that leads through to a rear hall from where stairs rise to the first floor.

To the right of the hall, there is a twin bedroom (all bedrooms are large) and a spacious storage room. From the rear hall, passing beneath the stairs, there is a second ground floor bedroom. The bedrooms have original built-in wardrobes.

To the left of the hall, another set of double doors open into an elegant drawing room, with windows overlooking the courtyard and with a wood-burning stove at the far end. From this room, doors open into a dining room/library.

There is a service passage that provides access to a laundry room, bathroom, stairs to the lower ground floor apartment and a lovely kitchen. This main kitchen is indicative of the works carried out by the previous owners: the character of the building has not been lost, but the kitchen has been re-fitted in a very stylish way with everything needed for catering a house of this size. Doors open from the kitchen onto a delightful breakfast terrace with views over the surrounding countryside.

    Main House - First Floor

On the first floor, there are 4 large bedrooms and 2/3 bathrooms, one of which is ensuite. The largest of the bedrooms has a stylish built-in shower and wash basin at one end. Overlooking the courtyard, there is another elegant drawing room with original tiled floor. Small service kitchen with access to stairs leading down to the courtyard.

The first floor bedrooms all have pitched roofs, original timber beams and tiled floors.

The Main House works extremely well as a holiday rental for a large family or group of friends, and the owner can retain their own privacy in either the lower ground floor apartment or the separate cottage across the courtyard.

Main House - Lower Ground Floor Apartment.

This can be completely separate and private from the rest of the Main House, and has its own entrance at the rear of the property.

The apartment has a large living room, very spacious and cool bedroom with plenty of storage for clothes, an open-plan kitchen dining room and a bathroom that could accommodate about 8 people! The bathroom has a loo, urinal, huge shower and bath-tub, and with plenty of storage. A reminder that this house was restored with guests in mind.

    Cottage

The cottage, although related to the main house by the courtyard, is a self-contained and private property with just as much charm and character.

    Cottage - Ground Floor

Large kitchen with wood-burning stove. Large and stylish living room with long built-in sofas running along two walls. Wood-burning stove. A door opens from the living room onto a very generous and very private patio with plenty of room for relaxing, dining and barbecues.

    Cottage - First Floor

Two very large bedrooms, one of which has a built-in corner sofa. Shower room with large walk-in shower cubicle.

    Outside

As mentioned, the setting for the Mill is quite magical, sitting beside a river that runs throughout the year. The land, 4,964 m2, is planted with mature trees and there are 50 olive trees dotted beyond the house.

As much attention has been given to the outdoor areas as to the interior spaces, with emphasis placed on providing a variety of areas for guests and family. Double wrought-iron gates open onto the main central courtyard and this area has been designed for outside living - a sofa against one wall, a built-in barbecue and a long refectory table for lazy meals beneath the vines. Stairs lead up to the pool area.

There is a long terrace with another built-in marble-topped dining table and a built-in sofa for 10 or 12 people, relaxing in style. There are beautiful views stretching over the adjacent hills.

Large pool with terrace and a separate spa pool.

At the rear of the house, close to the river, there is a separate outhouse that has been converted to provide a summer ‘lodge’: an open-plan outdoor kitchen, dining area and living area and a pretty patio.

Wood store and a large garden equipment store.

The property is connected to mains electricity and it has its own year-round water supply from a spring-fed waterfall. There is a large water deposit for the domestic water. Septic tank.

In summary, this is an immensely beguiling property in a lovely setting that exudes a rich sense of its own history.

The BBC One programme, ‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ was filmed across Andalucia throughout the summer of 2024. Amanda Holden and Alan Carr bought an abandoned village house in Moclín through Granada Village & Country, and the historic village was the main focus for the programme, following Alan and Amanda’s progress as they restored the property.

‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ will be shown on BBC One in January 2025 and will be available on iPlayer.

The restored property will be available for sale through Granada Village & Country, and featured on Rightmove, at the end of the series.
