The sixth Count of La Jarosa chose this site to build a cortijo in 1865, but the land had previously been farmed for centuries. Since 1865, the property has only had 6 owners, and in 2010 the property was completely restored with the intent of creating an holistic retreat centre. The footprint of the previous cortijo was used and extended and the accommodation forms a U-shape around a tranquil central courtyard.

The location is stunning and it is easy to see why this property works so well as a place in which to withdraw and unwind for a moment away from the hubbub of everyday life. The 12 acres of land follow the natural contours of the mountain side that sits below the peak of Cerro del Caballo, the fourth highest peak in the Sierra Nevada.

As mentioned, the existing property was designed specifically as a retreat destination with a high specification and sophisticated off-grid system for generating electricity, producing drinkable spring water, providing heating and hot water. A book outlining all the technical aspects of the property is available.

    Ground Floor (500 m2)

The 9 guest bedrooms are all arranged around the central courtyard and are accessible. Each bedroom has a private ensuite bathroom and two of the bedrooms have mezzanine floors for additional guests.

From the front door to the house there is an arterial space that runs through to large glazed doors that open onto the courtyard. The accommodation is designed to provide open and light communal areas and cosy and welcoming private spaces. The dining room has one wall that is completely glazed. The main living room is spacious and bright and has a wood-burning stove for the colder months. To the left of the front door there is a an office that has access to the private chapel. Separate WC/Utility Room. Kitchen with access to the front terrace.

A spiral staircase leads up from the entrance hall to the private apartment on the first floor. There is also access to the apartment from the rear of the property.

    First Floor Apartment (200 m2)

The private apartment has a large open-plan living room/kitchen with beautiful views and a door into a conservatory/winter living area. There are two generous bedrooms and a bathroom. The apartment also has a very large and private roof terrace and access to the driveway that runs behind the property. Above the rear guest bedrooms, with doors at the rear, there are 4 large loft rooms that provide storage, utility space and the back-up generator.

Every detail for a fully-functioning hotel/retreat has been considered.

    Outside

There is a large pool (71.91 m2) set into a terrace to one side of the house. Terraces wrap around two sides of the property and there is plenty of parking for guests.

The 12 acres of land contain 300 olive trees and 300 almond trees and there is more than enough room for growing produce. There is hard-standing for a gazebo and a separate area for a yurt.

    Distances

The villages of the beautiful Lecrin Valley are 5 kms away. Los Olivos, by its very nature, is located on a mountainside up a long track. Most of the track is well tarmaced but the upper stretches of the track can be rugged in places. This is a place of solitude and peace and this remoteness is only really available if you are prepared to go off the beaten track.

Granada City and the Coast are both 40 kms from the house.

    Málaga is 125 kms away.

In summary, this is an exceptional property for anyone wanting to get away from everything, breathe fresh air, drink pure spring water and generate an income from real sustainable tourism.

Information on the history and restoration of the property is available in .pdf format. There is also a technical manual.

The BBC One programme, ‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ was filmed across Andalucia throughout the summer of 2024. Amanda Holden and Alan Carr bought an abandoned village house in Moclín through Granada Village & Country, and the historic village was the main focus for the programme, following Alan and Amanda’s progress as they restored the property.

‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ will be shown on BBC One from January 2025 and will be available on iPlayer.

The restored property will be available for sale through Granada Village & Country, and featured on Rightmove, at the end of the series.
