This is a magnificent property, completely reformed in 2011 as a Creative Retreat Centre and every detail has been very carefully considered. The architecture is impressive and every corner has its own charm and character, both inside and out. There are private and communal areas, and plenty of room in which to retreat from the outside world in the most calming, sylvan setting surrounded by olive groves and pine trees.

The accommodation is arranged in a series of apartments, and everything is linked by interconnecting verandahs, terraces and patios with stunning views; the sound of tinkling water from the fountain in the central courtyard accompanies the journey throughout. Spaces are generous and there are many very beautiful features.

The property sits on the site of a Roman Villa dating from the 1st Century AD, and the small museum in the property has a display of wonderfully preserved ceramics dating from that time. Although the cortijo has been meticulously restored and maintained, the use of antique doors, original timbers and even an entrance bell cast in the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry, pose reminders everywhere of the property’s past.

This is undoubtedly a special property in a charmed location.

The best way to describe the extensive accommodation is to work through each apartment.

    Owner’s Apartment

This apartment has its own private entrance around the side of one of the main buildings, and it also has access to the central courtyard.

Double doors open from a spacious terrace with a private patio/seating area into the main apartment living area. This is a lovely, welcoming space with a sitting room complete with a balcony and wood-burning stove. There is door with stairs down to the apartment below and an area to one side that is used as the owner’s office. Previous owners were very accomplished cooks, so every kitchen is extremely well fitted and the owner’s apartment kitchen is no exception.

Large double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a lovely bathroom with full bath, shower bidet and WC. Everywhere, double doors open onto various terraces and balconies linking interior and exterior spaces.

    Ground Floor Apartment

Beneath the owner’s apartment there is a lovely 2 bedroom apartment with a staircase up to the owner’s accommodation although it can be kept quite separate for guests.

The front door opens from a raised terrace just up from the central courtyard and into a bright hallway. This apartment has lots of character, with chunky timber ceiling beams and tantalising glimpses of the courtyard. There are also two lovely bathrooms, one of which is ensuite, and double doors open from both bedrooms onto the terrace outside.

The main guest accommodation is set in a building on the opposite side of the courtyard.

    Casa Blanca

At the far end of a vast verandah, Casa Blanca is a 4 bedroom self-contained apartment. Again, all the double bedrooms have double doors that open onto different terraces, with different views and their own sense of tranquillity. There is a large bathroom with bath and shower and a separate shower room. The living area has a small kitchen.

    Goya

A pretty double bedroom with ensuite shower room and a door onto the front verandah.

    Dali

On the corner of the building, Dali is a large double bedroom with two sets of double doors onto the verandah and a lovely, large bathroom with bath and large separate shower and bidet. The bathroom fixtures and fittings throughout the property are of the best quality.

    Miro

Another lovely, bright and very comfortable apartment with two double bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate WC. Once again, the bedrooms both have double doors onto the terraces and verandahs outside.

    Villa Romana

Opposite the main entrance to the courtyard, this stands almost as separate property yet it remains linked to the heart of the house.

Here, the accommodation is set out on two floors. On the ground floor there is a living room with small kitchen, stairs to the first floor and corner wood-burning stove.

Ground floor bedroom and a shower room.

On the first floor, there are two lovely bedrooms and a family bathroom. Doors open from the first floor landing onto a beautiful private balcony that has stairs connecting it to the rest of the property’s outdoor areas.

Off the ground floor living area, there is a door into a Treatment Room/Office. This has its own entrance so can be kept separate from the rest of the Villa Romana accommodation. A door opens from the treatment room into a large and very tranquil Meditation Room, again with its own private door from the terrace outside. So many spaces interconnect or can be separated, making the spaces very flexible.

There is a fully equipped catering kitchen accessible from the far side of the house and from this kitchen, there is a door into the boiler room that provides the underfloor heating to the owner’s apartment.

    Guest Reception Rooms

The guest reception rooms are yet another very special feature of the property. Both rooms have huge glass doors that open onto the front verandah, taking in the magnificent views and allowing light to flood the furthest corners of each room.

There is an enormous living/dining room with open fire and doors leading to terraces and the central courtyard. Magnificent kitchen with marble-topped island. A gallery runs the length of the room and at either end there are displays of the 1st Century Roman ceramics discovered on the site.

Adjacent to this room, there is the Yoga or Art Studio and this space has been used for both purposes. Separate WC and large store room for equipment.

    Outside

This is a property in which to lose oneself and disconnect from the outside world, and the outside areas have been carefully created for serious relaxation and convivial entertaining away from distractions.

There is a gorgeous large pool, plus a separate pool for children, both set into a huge terrace with stunning views, and there is a separate terrace with hot tub. On a terrace above, there is a circular outside kitchen and dining room, equipped on a par with the best kitchen: a wood-burning pizza/bread oven, and antique wood-burning stove, plenty of work surfaces and space for an enormous dining table.

There is an outdoor, covered yoga area and a raised era (an ancient threshing circle complete with the antique mill-stones, and surrounded by Cypress trees).

In every corner of the outdoor spaces, there are carefully considered seating or dining areas, quiet spots for reading, hammocks suspended for relaxing, calm areas shaded by mature trees.

There is an outside shower, a WC and a room for the pool filtration system. On a lower level, below the pool, there is a large store room.

    Workshop and separate garage.

The existing olive trees produce a crop sufficient for producing delicious olive oil, and the neighbouring farmer is happy to sell some of his land surrounding this property, available by separate negotiation.

An extraordinary property in an historic, spectacular and peaceful location.

The BBC One programme, ‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ was filmed across Andalucia throughout the summer of 2024. Amanda Holden and Alan Carr bought an abandoned village house in Moclín through Granada Village & Country, and the historic village was the main focus for the programme, following Alan and Amanda’s progress as they restored the property.

‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ will be shown on BBC One from 24th January 2025 and will be available on iPlayer.

The restored property will be available for sale through Granada Village & Country, and featured on Rightmove, at the end of the series.
